HomeAgain microchip company is offering a new service to owners of microchipped pets. Check their website for details. They are expanding their pet recovery services but also charging a yearly fee. If you are already enrolled in their database you will not be forced to pay yearly. For those considering future microchipping of a pet but not wanting to sign up with HomeAgain, please ask us about registering your microchip with the AKC - an inexpensive alternative.

The staff page has been updated. Our staff posistions are currently filled until we can find a second veterinarian. We are still looking for a second full-time veterinarian, and plan to expand our hours when one can be hired.

I have had to move the change in business hours up a week due to the departure of a key staff member. Donna has moved to Idaho to be with her ailing father. I would like to wish her and her family the best.
7/12/06
Beginning the week of the July 23rd we will have a change in business hours to M-F 8am to 5:30 pm. We will be closed on Saturday and Sunday. This will hopefully be only temporary until more staff can be hired. We appreciate your continued support. Thank you!
We are currently looking for a full-time associate veterinarian and full-time veterinary technician. If you are interested please call or inquire at the clinic.

I have diagnosed more cases of roundworm this week than in the past 6 months so I'd have to say there is an outbreak going on. These cases are healthy dogs just getting routine fecal screening (recommended yearly). Roundworm is contagious to humans by the way. Monthly prevention is easy - one small pill. Check out this link.

My 2 cents on "Greenies":
The local media has really latched on to the "Greenies" issue. Apparently dogs have swallowed large pieces of greenie without chewing first and this has led to intestinal obstruction and in some cases death.
This is without a doubt frightening and awful but perhaps a little perspective is in order. On a regular basis I take out of the dogs the following: bones, rawhide, balls, carpet, rocks, corncobs, tampons, underwear, socks, rocks, bark, toys, coins, wooden shishkebob skewers, etc... I'm still waiting for the local news to come do a story but I guess none of that is newsworthy.
Heres the thing. Dogs can and will swallow anything you leave on the floor. Nothing is 100% safe for your dog to chew on.
12/23/05 Merry Christmas everyone!
We have upgraded our leptospirosis vaccination to a four-way product. Leptospirosis is an infection of the liver and kidneys in dogs. It is very serious and has the potential to spread to humans. The new four-way vaccine protects against more strains of this disease.

Microchipping is permanent ID for your pet. The chip when magnetically scanned gives a number which you register to your name, address, phone number etc. We offer implantation of Home Again brand microchips. Feel free to call for more information.
Home Again started their own database in 2005. Previously one would register with the AKC (american kennel club). The AKC database is still going and it is actually cheaper to register with them - $12.50. Home Again charges $17.50. For identification purposes, it is adequate to register with either company. AKC has been doing this for the past 10 years and is non-profit. You may also register with both databases if you would like. I have scanned in the AKC form at work and I will see if I can upload it to this site. Its pdf format which hopefully is ok to use... Hopefully the future will bring a more standardized system.

It looks like I need to address some concerns regarding monthly preventative products for dogs and cats. These are products mainly used for flea, tick, and worm prevention. There are many products on the market now and each has its merits and weaknesses. Part of what I do is help you pick a product and routine that will suit your needs. Another part of what I do is protect the public health by warning people of the danger posed by parasites that people can get from their pets. The main parasites we worry about are roundworm and hookworm. I feel responsible for educating people about this, not just because I sell preventatives, but because I am supposed to do this. I will inform you, and ask you once if you want to make a purchase. I do not push these things. If I have not spoken to you about this (perhaps because we were focusing on some other aspect of your pet's health) and you would like to learn more, please stop by the clinic for an informational brochure or try this web page.
Please understand that I will not directly authorize purchase of any of these products with an internet warehouse. This is common policy with 90+ percent of veterinary clinics. I have spoken with both Snoqualmie Valley, and North Bend clinics and they have the same policy. Any clinic that does not enforce this policy is probably part of a large corporation and charging you way more for their services. For more detail about this topic and further information on my prescription policy, click this.
Let me emphasize that these are presciption products. What that means is that you are not just buying a pill, but a system of support, care, and accountability that must be in place behind it.
Remember, local small businesses like mine have made a large investment in this community. This benefits everyone in the form of jobs, increased house values, and tax dollars to the city. This business has donated to local little league, firefighters, and Encompass charity for children. Local small businesses care about you. Please support them!

I've updated the "Staff" page.
I'm seeing a lot of ticks this month. Be sure to check your dogs after walks on trails. Ticks like to attach to the face, legs, and underside.
I would like to thank everyone for making it a successful summer for our clinic! I wish I had the time and resources for maintaining a message board with this site. If I did I assure you it would be public and I would do my best to explain the value of veterinary services and care. I answer phone calls all day and I encourage you to call with any questions you may have. I cant always call back right away, but I will call!
9/7/05
The veterinary assistant opening has been filled and we will be welcoming our new employee Heather next week. Please feel free to leave an application if you are interested. I do keep them.
I have added a link to a webpage for animal behavior.
7/13/05
We are now interviewing/accepting applications for a part-time veterinary assistant. You must be willing to work a flexible 25-30 hour week. You must be comfortable in a medical setting and able to lift 50 pounds. Please call or inquire at the clinic.
7/7/05
I've added a new page detailing the prescription policy I've decided to implement. It includes what I hope is a decent editorial on internet pharmacies.

I spend a lot of time talking to people about monthly worm prevention. Some people are surprised to hear me recommend monthly deworming because they have been told it is not necessary in the northwest. While it is true the heartworm is very rare in Washington, intestinal worms such as roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm are all seen on a regular basis. And people, especially children, can get them! Here are a couple of links if you would like to read more: Growing up with pets and CAPC guidelines.
There is now a link to the ASPCA poisonous plants page under "links".
5/20/05
Happy Spring everyone! I am planning to post a list of poisonous plants soon. Please be careful with slugbait and pets. Dogs often eat the pelleted form and it can make them very sick. Look for pet friendly iron slug bait. I hope to be updating the site more and more.

With limited shopping on the ridge, more and more people are purchasing pet foods from us. We plan to increase our inventory to meet demand and apologize to those of you who have found us sold out of the food you need. We have maintenance diets as well as prescription diets and are happy to recommend a food for you pet. Our maintenance food is Hills Science Diet. We also carry Hill prescription diet and Purina prescription diet for pets with special needs. Many pets that do not like one brand will like the other! Please let us know if you need an alternative diet. I have added links to both companies' web pages.

Welcome to our new web page! I hope to be adding new content over the coming weeks. This is my first webpage and I am just learning how to make one. I think I'll start by putting up our often requested phone number. Happy New Year! - Dr. McKee
